La Maison du Livre (BEL)
The “Maison du Livre”: the book and writing as the main theme…
Created in 1997, the Maison du Livre or the “House of Books” is a non-profit organization, located in Brussels, whose objective is to organize activities in association with books, and with reading and writing in a broad sense.
Throughout the year, the public is invited to visit thematic exhibitions, participate in book presentations, round tables and debates on social issues, attend readings of texts or literary performances. Debout les Mots! or Stand up Words!, the quarterly magazine from the Maison du Livre is published in 8000 copies and sent to 6,000 people free of charge.
The Maison du Livre is a house of writing in its forms and for all. Writing workshops and courses (fiction, life stories, journalism…) and creative expressions (calligraphy, pop-ups, Manga comics…) of all levels are offered over the course of the year, led by professionals.
The Maison du Livre and the public library of the town of Saint-Gilles share a space in an art deco designed building. This is an open-space conducive to meeting others and is characterized by its friendliness, warmly greeting all different types of public (adolescents, adults, literacy learners and lovers of words, ideas, literature and for just curious people….). Our place is open to all cultures and all suggestions.
Registered with many literary associations and partnerships, the Maison du Livre is supported by the Wallonia-Brussels, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Municipality of Saint-Gilles.
